The farmers had the higher status in the area called Japan the reason was because the land was understood to be theirs.
The reason was because the teachings of Confucius placed them to be above merchants as well as other occupation . This was because they were the said to be the ones that fed the people of other occupations in the land.
Hence the land was said to be theirs. In the feudal era they were the ones that were responsible for feeding the other people. The farmers in the time period were considered to be an honored class of people. Most of the crops that they grew then had to be handed over to the Daimyos. The Daimyos were the lords. They would then be the ones to give back some of the crops to the farmers in the form of charity.
