The Church or The Catholic Church was outraged by the art and ideas of Renaissance.

During the Renaissance, scholars began to question the unhelpful religious doctrines and rituals of the Catholic Church. It declined the power and influence the church once had. Thus, the church was outraged by Renaissance ideas. The church was also offended by Renaissance art and painting.

Churches and preachers condemned religious paintings. Durer's self-portrait was controversial. It was found blasphemous by the church and the public because it was associated with Jesus Christ. During the Renaissance, people increasingly viewed the world from an anthropocentric perspective. This had a strong influence on religion. People were increasingly paying attention to this world rather than the afterlife. Ultimately, humanism gave birth to a spirit of skepticism.
