Arab oil embargo is a temporary cessation of oil shipments from the middle east to the United States, the Netherlands, the Portugal, Rhodesia and South Africa.
It was imposed by oil producing Arab countries in 1973 in relation for support of Israel during the Yom Kippur war.
The embargo was lifted on March 1994 but the embargo on other countries continued. The Arab oil embargo was the first oil crisis and oil supply destruction leading to major price increases and worldwide crisis.
The embargo costed the United States and other western countries to reassess their dependence on middle eastern oil.
