When assessing clients prior to administering antihistamines, one should know about the allergies of the person.

Special care should be taken when these drugs are used by any patient with a history of arrhythmias or prolonged QT intervals. An anti-hitamine reduces allergy symptoms by binding histamine receptors and thus reducing fluid leakage that causes runny nose etc so the use of anti-histamines definitely makes life more bearable for example in the spring when pollen dust is prevalent.

For temporary relief of dryness of mouth from antihistamines ,the patient can chew on sugarless gums ,the nurse can let the patient have bits of ice melt in their mouth or the nurse can give a saliva substitute.
