Ziggurats were built in ancient Mesopotamia. The ziggurat was always built with a core of mud brick and an exterior covered with baked brick. These Ziggurats were impressive pyramid-like, stepped temples, which were either square or rectangular.
Ziggurats featured no inner chambers and stood about 170 feet high. They were accessible only by way of the stairways, it traditionally symbolized a link between the gods and the human kind, although it also served practically as shelter from floods.
