Arm and hand motor area is the largest, and occupies the part of precentral gyrus represented by the largest area of the primary motor cortex .

The primary motor cortex is located in the precentral gyrus  the premotor area is more rostral. The pyramidal cells of cortical layer V (also called Betz cells) are the upper motor neurons of the primary motor cortex.

The primary motor cortex, or M1, is one of the principal brain areas involved in motor function. M1 is located in the frontal lobe of the brain, along a bump called the precentral gyrus .
