The Asmat of New Guinea believed that the deterioration of art was an important aspect of rituals, which guided the human spirit after death.

The Asmat are an ethnic group of New- Guinea, residing within the province of South Papua, Indonesia. The Asmat honoured their dead with feasts and rituals. After a community had experienced a specific number of deaths, they'd stage a bis-feast.

Traditionally, the Asmat people of Southwest New Guinea believed that no death was the results of accident or aging. Rather, every death was considered the work of an enemy caused through combat or through magic and, in turn, every death had to be avenged.
