Out of a total population of 12,240,293 in the slave states in 1860, 393,975 people, or 3.22 percent of the population, were slave owners. As a result, we must change our statistics to only include free people. A total of 8,289,782 people were free in the slave states, and there were 393,975 slave owners, or 4.75 percent of the free population.
