Redundancy is the use of backup components or parallel paths to raise reliability.
Redundancy in engineering is the duplication of essential system components or functions with the goal of enhancing system reliability, typically in the form of a backup or fail-safe, or to enhance real system performance, as in the case of GNSS receivers or multi-threaded computer processing.
Some control system components may be tripled, or triple modular redundancy, in many safety-critical systems, such as fly-by-wire and hydraulic systems in aircraft (TMR).
The other two could then override a mistake in one of the components. A triply redundant system contains three subcomponents, all of which must malfunction before the system as a whole can fail.
