The theory of cognitive dissonance states that people are motivated to take action to resolve inconsistencies between attitudes and behavior.

Cognitive dissonance theory postulates that an underlying psychological tension is created when a person's behavior is inconsistent along with his or her thoughts and ideals. This underlying tension then motivates a person to make an attitude change that would produce consistency between thoughts and behaviors.

The concept that asserts when a person is faced with inconsistencies in attitude or conduct, he/she can take action to restore consistency. Cognitive theory is an approach to psychology that tries to give an explanation for human behavior by understanding their thought processes.

Leon Festinger first proposed the cognitive dissonance theory focused on how humans try and attain internal consistency.  He suggested that people have an internal need to make sure that their beliefs and behaviors are constant. Inconsistent or conflicting ideals result in disharmony, which human beings attempt to avoid.
