An organism that cannot reproduce without a host is said to be obligately parasitic. Holoparasite is another name for the obligatory parasite. Obligatory parasites include viruses. They are unable to procreate outside of live cells. They are hence regarded as obligatory intracellular parasites.
They infect a host cell to utilize its genetic resources for reproduction, protein synthesis, and energy production. The virus cannot thrive on culture media that is not alive. It needs functioning cells to maintain its metabolism and grow. It multiplies by independently forming each of its components using host machinery, then putting those components together to create viral particles. A virus is not irritable or mobile. For transfer from one host to another, it needs a vector.
