The field of child development focuses on the scientific study of the systematic processes of change and stability in people.

Initially, most developmental psychology focused on children and adolescents. However, there have been some early attempts to study total lifespan. In 1777, the German physicist and philosopher Johann Tetens (1736-1807) published a book dealing with many lifespan issues that are still relevant today.

With the establishment of the Wundt Institute in Leipzig at the end of the nineteenth century (1879), psychology emerged as a scientific field. Wundt's method was experimental, introspective, and aimed at studying the mind and behavior of adults.

Developmental psychology, also known as lifelong psychology, is the branch of psychology concerned with changes in cognitive, motivational, psychophysiological, and social functioning that occur throughout a person's life.
