The sensorimotor stage is the first of four stages in Piaget's theory of cognitive development and usually happens during the first two years of a child's life. It is characterized by the child discovering the differences between himself and his environment. At this point, they use their senses to learn about themselves and the people around them.
According to Jean, children at this stage learn about their world through "seeing, touching, sucking, and feeling". Another important feature of the sensorimotor stage is that children learn the concept of cause and effect. The concept of causality is when children understand that they can move stuff with their hands, and how their physical actions affect their environment.This concept forms the base for the later realization of object persistence.
