The sansei and yonsei are group of Japanese Americans the occupational structure of the larger society.

Yonsei is a word from the Japanese diaspora used to refer to the great-grandchildren of Japanese immigrants, especially in North America and Latin America (Issei). Nisei refers to Issei's offspring (the second generation).

The third generation Yonsei are called Sansei. Between the 1880s and 1924, the Issei forefathers of the bulk of Yonsei in the Western Hemisphere left Japan.  A Japanese individual who left Japan is known as an Issei. A Yonsei individual typically has more than one great-grandparent who was born in Japan.
