Dance Therapy is defined as the psychotherapeutic use of movement to promote the emotional, social, cognitive, and physical integration of an individual.

Psychotherapy helps people change behavior, increase happiness, and overcome problems, especially using psychological techniques based on regular face-to-face interactions. Psychotherapy aims to improve a person's well-being and mental health, resolve or reduce destructive behaviors, beliefs, impulses, thoughts, or emotions, and improve relationships and social skills. Numerous forms of psychotherapy have been developed for individual adults, families, children, and adolescents. Certain types of psychotherapy are considered evidence-based for treating diagnosed mental disorders. Other types have been criticized as pseudoscience.

There are hundreds of techniques in psychotherapy, some of which are subtle variations. Others are based on very different understandings of psychology. Most often, sessions are one-on-one between clients and therapists, but may also be in groups, including families.

Psychotherapists are mental health professionals such as psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health nurses, clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, or professional counselors.
