Opsonization involves antibodies coating microorganisms in order to facilitate phagocytosis

Opsonization is an immunological procedure in which opsonins are used to mark foreign pathogens for phagocyte eradication. The negatively charged cell walls of the pathogen and phagocyte reject one another in the absence of an opsonin, such as an antibody. Pathogens and dead or dying cells are eliminated via the cellular process known as phagocytosis.

The second stage of phagocytosis is opsonization; the first is chemotaxis, which directs the phagocyte to the area of infection or cell death. Opsonization is a crucial step in host defense that prepares particles or complexes for easy ingestion by phagocytic cells. Particles coated with particular serum proteins, called opsonins, adhere ardently to phagocytes and cause ingestion.
