Equatorial currents that are part of the subtropical gyres flow east to west. Equatorial counter currents between the gyres flow west to east.

The circulation around anticyclones is clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the southern hemisphere due to the Coriolis effect. The central anticyclone is due to westerly winds to the north of the gyre and easterly trade winds to the south.

This particular circulation covers most of the Pacific Ocean and includes four major currents. The north is the North Pacific Current, the east is the California Current, the south is the North Equatorial Current, and the west is the Kuroshio Current.

The subtropical gyre is surrounded by four interconnected ocean currents. The two boundary currents are roughly oriented north-south at the east-west extremities, and the two east-west currents are at the northern and southern extremities of the circulation.
