The Kuroshio is the western boundary current of the subtropical gyre in the North Pacific and requires comparison with its Atlantic counterpart, the Gulf Stream.

The Western Boundary Current is a strong, narrow current confined to the western side of the basin. In the North Atlantic, the Gulf Stream is the western boundary current of the anticyclonic subtropical gyre, and the North Atlantic Current (NAC) is its northeastern extension (Arhan, 1990; Rossby, 1996).
