ATP can be hydrolyzed to ADP and Pi by the addition of water, releasing energy. ADP can be "recharged" to form ATP by adding energy, combining with Pi in a process that releases a water molecule.
As energy is released, they form ATPs, binding phosphate to ADP. So the energy is in ATP. The process of binding phosphate to ADP is called oxidative phosphorylation.
