Social strain refers to social interactions within a network of social relationships that are a source of stress because they drain resources or provide assistance in an unhelpful manner.
Disjuncture between legitimate means, and cultural goals cause strain/anomie. This strain leads to adaptations.

The strain theory of Merton contends that societal systems can coerce people into committing crimes. According to the classic strain theory, deviation is more likely to occur when "cultural aspirations" (such as financial prosperity) and possibilities for achieving them are not aligned in a society.
Five Responses to Strain:
- Conformity: individuals are following a societal goal through legitimate means.
- Innovation: the individual shares the cultural goal of the society but reaches this goal through illegitimate means
- Ritualists: individuals who have given up hope of achieving society’s approved goals but still operate according to society’s approved means
- Retreatists (like dropouts or hermits): individuals who have rejected both a society’s goals and the legitimate means of obtaining them, and live outside conventional norms altogether
- Rebellion exists outside of Merton’s system altogether
