Women demonstrated that they could perform "men's work" to a high standard during the Second World War. Women were given access to manufacturing jobs when men were called to active duty in the military and the demand for war materials rose.
However, women's employment was only promoted while the war was still going on. Federal and civilian rules that were implemented after the war replaced women workers with men.
The post-war reconstruction effort made the need for an expanded labour force urgent. In the late 1940s, the government launched campaigns to encourage women to enter or stay in the labour market, and encouraged the migration of workers from (former) British colonies to fill the labour shortages.
