There is a correlation between the gene sequence of the Hox cluster inside the chromosome (telomeric to centromeric end) and the sequential activation of these genes in the ontogenetic units that run along the anterior-posterior axis of the embryo. This phenomenon is referred to as the Hox gene collinearity. Despite the fact that this collinearity property is strictly adhered to in bilaterians (such as vertebrates), it is disregarded in all other kinds of animals.
