Bipolar disorder is a mental illness in which the person exhibits depression which alternates with mania. The person suffering from bipolar disorder can exhibit more than 6 or more emotions if the disorder reaches extreme levels. These feelings go from reasonable to extreme levels and can be seen as a cause of concern. The person may feel irritable because of little things and this can explode into annoyance or anger issues.

When a nurse is approached by such a patient she can ensure,

  • Safe environment: - A nurse can provide a safe environment for the client and related people. This can make them feel at ease.
  • Meet the physiologic needs: - Keeping the patient away from distracting visuals, noises, smells, etc can help them calm their nerves. Keeping the patient in a room where tv, noises, radio, etc are not present will help them calm down.
  • Therapeutic communication: - Therapeutic communication is the way of speaking in small, clear sentences to address the patient as they might suffer from short attention spans.
