In the reaction: a + b ---> c + d

At the beginning (time 0), a and b will react to produce c and d.

As soon as c and d are produced, 2 reactions go on simultaneously:

  1. a and b reacting to produce more c and d
  2. c and d reacting to produce a and b

These reactions continue until as much c and are being produced as much as a and b.

In other words, equilibrium is reached when there is no net production of a and b as well as c and d.
