Symbolism is a literary device that is used to create an impression by providing additional meaning to an action, an item, or a name.

What is the importance of Symbolism in stories?

Symbolism is the process of affixing or associating something solid with something other in order to give it a new and much more meaningful significance.

In other words, symbolism enables a writer to transmit information to an audience in a lyrical manner rather than saying it directly.

This indirect method allows an author to add richness and complexity to their work. The restriction for authors is that the symbol's meaning must be supported by the complete context of the story.

The bird, for example, represents innocence and beauty in the 1960 novel "To Kill a Mockingbird."

The mockingbird was chosen by Lee because it has no guile. A mockingbird's sole aim in life is to sing; it has no desire to cause harm to others.

As a result, murdering a Mockingbird is regarded as an act of irrational cruelty.
