Robert Beatty has become one of the greatest inspirations for fantasy authors everywhere. His works have even been translated and used in schools across the globe. His interests in career paths might have differed, but it did not stop him from pursuing literature.
Beatty was born in 1981 on a cattle ranch in Kentucky, which he described as “one of the most beautiful places in the world!” A lot of his childhood was said to have been spent drawing, in which he was inspired by many MTV cartoon series. He spent his school years exploring many interests, such as graphic design, robotics, film, and music.
Beatty was said to have started writing as a young boy of eleven or twelve, when he had run out of things to read. He slowly built his novel writing skills at the same time he advanced in computer and engineering studies. While he later chose software and engineering for his career path, it did not deter his passion of writing fiction and fantasy novels. Beatty later moved to Asheville, North Carolina, in which had the scenery he desired when writing his stories. This town encouraged literary studies, so he took the opportunity and attended writing workshops. In one of these classes he met his wife, Jennifer, who he would later have three daughters with; Camille, Genevieve, and Elizabeth. At the same time, he had begun learning under one of the editors of “Narrative Magazine” to improve his writing skills.
North Carolina also held the setting for one of his biggest works, Serafina and the Black Cloak, which would later become a 4-book series and movie. The Biltmore estate is both a real place and where the characters in the story reside. While the actual owners didn`t necessarily promote fictional stories relating to their estate, Beatty`s drafts convinced them otherwise. After a few dozen runs through fellow editors, the tale was published. Beatty realized that he needed something to draw even more attention to his book, since he wasn`t considered a big author yet. He acquired permission from the owners of Biltmore Estate to film a movie based on the book, in which one of his daughters, Genevieve, played Serafina. His wife, Jennifer, played a part in costume design as well, making this not only a way to market his novel, but to involve his family in a career he is so passionate for.
