In the state of Florida, if not directly involved in diving activity when operating in open water (the ocean), vessels must travel at no wake speed when within 300 feet of diver down flags.
This is to ensure that nobody gets hurt, and the authorities believe that 300 feet is the appropriate distance to do that.
