Natural selection can benefit a species by helping it adapt or stay alive in its environment. For example the peppered moth example is pretty famous due to darwin. There were white moths and white with black spots on them (peppered moth name) the ones that were peppered ended up living because they could camouflage into the trees more where as the ones that were white died due to sticking out to predators very easily.
