What does it mean to analyze a story?
The objective of a story or literary analysis is to find meaning. Here are the steps to analyzing a story.
- Read the story then summarize in your own words.
- While reading pay close attention to the theme of each paragraph. What is it trying to say?
- Who is the lead or key character in the story?
- Does the lead character have problems? what are they? This problem is referred to as conflict.
- After reading, ask yourself, what is the morale or principle of this story? That is the central idea.
- Note that you must provide evidence for the answers above from the story itself. This is called textual evidence.
