Sergeant Dongan's death was ironic because:

  • Despite his war experience, he became a victim of the circumstance.
  • Also, after his death, he was not buried rather he was burnt. This might have been because of his racist inclinations.

What is Irony?

Irony refers to the opposite of what is expected. In the story, Fallen Angels, Sergeant Dongan discriminated against the blacks. Yet, he was not given a befitting burial as a supposed superior after his death.

Also, he had a lot of war experience but was still a war casualty. All of these point to irony.
