how do we know:
because the 5 is negative we have -5 + -5=0 because negatives only go up by subtracting so 0+-5 is 5.
because the 1 is positive we can do 1+1 as were doing 2x1 so 1+1=2.
because we are doing 0.25x7 we need to know that we can flip the problem so we get 7x0.25. this makes things easy for you and me, we already know that 4 0.25's make 1 and we also know that 0.25+0.25 is 0.50 and 1 + 0.50 is 1.50 or just 1.5
