The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the sequel to the 1947 General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).

What is the role of GATT?

The GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) was an international trade treaty. It was signed in 1947 by 23 countries, including Canada, and went into effect on January 1, 1948.

It was improved over the course of eight rounds of negotiations, culminating in the formation of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

On January 1, 1995, it took the place of the GATT. The GATT was broadly focused on product trade. Its goal was to liberalize trade by lowering tariffs and eliminating barriers among member countries.
