Band: Band classes are performance ensembles in which students learn to play such instruments such as flute, clarinet, saxophone, drums, and much more. The AKS for Band instruction uniquely embraces a performance- and standards-based curriculum.
Orchestra: Orchestra classes are performance ensembles in which students learn to play such instruments such as violin, viola, cello, and bass. The AKS for Orchestra instruction uniquely embraces a performance- and standards-based curriculum.
Chorus: This performance-based class focuses on continued and consistent demonstration of proper breath control and correct singing posture. Students demonstrate open vowel sounds, properly articulated consonants, and appropriate tone quality on more advanced repertoire. Students demonstrate more advanced proficiency in sight-reading at the expected competency level and read music with more complex melodies and rhythms.
Theater Arts: Theatre is a collaborative form of fine art that allows students to become live performers, who present the experience of a real or imagined event before a live audience.
Visual Arts and Media Arts:
In visual arts class students experiment with various art forms such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts, and/or photography.
Media art refers to artworks created with new media technologies, including digital art, computer graphics, computer animation, virtual art, and Internet art.
Media & Mass Communications: Journalism
Students will learn how to become perceptive media consumers and digital creators. They study the basic principles of print and online media as they examine the role of media in our society.
Filmmaking & analysis, podcast producing, graphic design, web production, script writing, sound production, photography, news writing & reporting are a few topics we have covered in the past.
Language Arts Exploration: This course is designed to help students become better readers. Students acquire the knowledge and skills to build stamina for reading texts. These skills are directly related to those learned in the Language arts academic classroom
Health: Students learn how to live healthy lifestyles and reduce their risks for unhealthy behaviors. Additionally, age-appropriate instruction regarding safety, personal health and wellness, mental and emotional health, healthy eating, alcohol and other drugs, tobacco, violence prevention and human growth and anatomy will be implemented.
Physical Education: In physical education, students will learn how to participate in a variety of activities and game-like situations which focus on various motor and manipulative skills, movement concepts, physical fitness, personal and social responsibility, self-expression, safety, and enjoyment.
Junior Leadership Corps:
Junior Leadership Corps 6 covers a variety of topics including Leadership, Communication, Health, and Physical Education. Students will identify key concepts of leadership, as well as recognize leadership strengths and weaknesses. This course covers a variety of topics including Leadership, Communication, Health, and Physical Education. Students will determine how teamwork fits into leadership, as well as communicate using effective writing, speaking, and listening skills.
Business Education:
Students will develop and model employability skills, as well as apply basic skills in a variety of Microsoft programs.
Business Education covers a variety of topics including employability skills, computer applications, programming, and internet safety. Students will utilize a variety of Microsoft programs, as well as identify programming languages and terminology.
Engineering:
Students will examine the nature of engineering and technology, as well as explaining the engineering design process. Course covers a variety of topics including the progression and impact of invention and innovation on society, the core concepts of engineering and technology, the engineering design process and problem solving skills, leadership skills and work ethic. Computer Science:
Foundations of Secure Information Systems covers a variety of topics including basic computer components, the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, computer networks, cybersecurity ethics and digital citizenship. Students will explore careers in information technology as well as develop procedures to solve problems current to everyday life through computational thinking. Include, Apply troubleshooting concepts to issues regarding identity, compatibility, data, and differentiate networks based on coverage area.
