In the 1500s, Cortez conquered the Aztec empire and took possession of Mexico. The interaction between the Natives and the Europeans led to millions of Natives dying from various diseases.
The surviving Natives were assimilated into a society that operated the caste system and racism. In the early 1800s, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla started a rebellion but was executed.
The rebellion continued however and eventually Mexico won its independence from the Spanish.
