I’m not entirely sure if this will help, however if you need to write a short story I would suggest it to be modern time, in an abandoned school, and it to have an eerie and suspenseful mood. Maybe a kid was dared to go into the school by their friends and during the trip in the school, the kid gradually gets more and more scared by little noises and such. At the end when they are on their last bit of sanity, they hear and ear splitting scream and run out, only to find out it was a bird.
