The layer of the gases that surrounds the planet and is found in the layers of the planet held by gravity is called the atmosphere.  It comprises many gases in certain ratios and varies in temperature according to altitude.

Living organisms produce most of the oxygen that is found in the atmosphere.

How a living organism plays role in oxygen production?

  • Oxygen is the most essential and crucial gas required for the survival of the organism and the process that occurs.

  • Living organisms like plants and trees are the major source for oxygen production and yield them by the process of photosynthesis. They utilize atmospheric inorganic resources like water, carbon dioxide and sun energy to create glucose(food molecule) and oxygen.

  • Even small microscopic organisms like cyanobacteria use inorganic components and synthesize oxygen. Thus, phytoplankton and microorganisms also contribute to oxygen production.

Therefore, living organisms yields most of the oxygen.
