Douglass simply lays out his life story up until the time just before he escapes to Massachusetts in 1838. In 1845 he wrote his “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave” which he tells the reader what being a slave is like. In 1855 Douglass penned, “My Bondage and My Freedom” and in 1882 he penned, “The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass.” One has to read all three volumes to gain the full understanding of Douglass’ life. All of them deal with inequality, i.e., as a slave, as a Black runaway in the North, and as a Black man involved in equal rights for Blacks, Women and immigrants in America.
