The Jacket is one of Gary Soto's short but great stories.
The narrator states that he had asked his mother for a new jacket. After spending quote a moment describing the exact type he wanted, his disappointment knew no bounds when he got the jacket which according to him, had the "color of a day-old guacamole".
The narrator states that he wore the jacket for three years...and that in all of that time, no love came to him. In one of the sentences, he writes:
"All during that time, no love came to me - no little dark girl in a Sunday dress she wore on Monday.
