Extremely close elections limited their ability to maneuver and take tough
political stands.
This is the official elected by the people which has the chief executive
power and is also involved in the execution of laws which are made by the
legislative arm of government.
The election during the year 1876 had Hayes receive 185 electoral votes to
Tilden's 184 electoral votes which was very close. Hayes was chosen as a
result of him agreeing to remove the federal troops whose support was
essential in Republican state governments. The President effect however
became minimal and therefore ineffective.
