is like living in the trenches or fighting in the war.

–Each diary entry

•Be creative and realistic. You can be a solider from any nation you
wish, challenge yourself by trying to think outside the box. Create a
persona and a life story. You can be from any branch of the military, airmen, a
medic, an infantryman, etc. It was not uncommon for soldiers to write
poetry or draw in their journals.

Now I'm embroiled in a "war to end all wars," and I'm tasked with fighting for the release of the innocent people forced to work as slaves in the mining cave. I'm fighting a losing battle right now as I write you this letter. I am a kind individual who works tirelessly to safeguard the rights of innocent people. This is a difficult struggle. I'm up against musket-wielding opponents. The government provides us with machine guns because this conflict is more devastating than any prior conflict.

It will penetrate your bones if you fire it at someone, and I want to emphasize that if it does not return to the world, do not despair; continue to live. I will do all possible to defend the slaves and assist them in escaping the mining cave where the owner regularly beats them and provides them with just a little piece of food. Although the food I consume on a daily basis is unhealthy, I am forced to consume it.

As a consequence, I'll have more stamina for combat. Life in battle is quite different from life at home, since when one person sleeps, the other must remain awake and ready in case someone or anything attempts to assault them from the outside. Combat is quite difficult here, and I'm scared I'm going to die. There are casualties, firearms, and explosions from a cannon all around my body. You will be given a variety of tasks during warfare, such as cutting wood to maintain the fire and fabricating a weapon for the morning's fight. The most critical aspect of this war is that when someone dies, they must return and get a flag that will assist our colleagues in determining where to fire and where the enemy are located.

I wish I could instantly return home, but I feel that there are innumerable innocent individuals in need of our protection. I believe that I will fight until the last end, since it is a hero's duty to defend and never abandon his people. I appreciate you, father and mother, for bringing out the best in me and nurturing my development. I will never make you feel sorry for me. That is a hope that will enable me in developing more battle methods. I'd want to convey my thanks to my family for encouraging me to grow and improve as a person.
