The picture may be interpreted in many ways. Maybe she wants out of a miserable, loveless marriage. Or the Gilded Cage's wife may have adored her husband. Wanting anything else doesn't imply you don't love your partner. She may have had a good life until she heard the dancing tribe outside her window. Then she realizes she had forgotten to be free. She forgot to laugh. She didn't fly. Maybe this artwork is Evelyn De Morgan's way of reminding us not to fall into the same golden cage.
