Nora and Emmy's relationship is very motherly. Nora views Emmy as her daughter and is very playful. Page 944, Nora gives gifts to the children. Further on in the book Nora says "yes, let's play hide and seek", this shows motherly instincts in a way.
Nora adores Emmy by calling her childish animal nicknames, this includes “my little skylark” and “my squirrel.” This is dehumanizing yet asserts power.
