Respuesta :

The 36th President of the United States of America, President Lyndon Johnson, on the 22nd day of 1965 signed into law the Highway Beautification Act.

During this occasion, he is reported to have said that the Act will aid the recuperation of the Nations' greatness.

According to him, the project (which really was a brainchild of the First Lady - Bird Johnson) would help to preserve the heritage of the country. Some of his exact words are as follow:

"America likes to think of itself as a strong and stalwart and expanding nation.  It identifies itself gladly with the products of its own hands...these are and these should be a source of pride to every American...But there is more to America than raw industrial might...

There is a part of America which was here long before we arrived, and will be here, if we preserve it, long after we depart...this is the America that no amount of science or skill can ever recreate or actually ever duplicate...

This America is the source of America's greatness. It is another part of America's soul as well.

What President Johnson was saying, in essence, was that it was illogical to destroy the very thing that made America great in order for America to become or remain great. Especially where that factor was irreplaceable.

The national greatness was going to be restored by preserving the beauty that America still had. It was going to achieve that by preventing all private and public entities from destroying the environment in the execution of their industrial activities.

To preserve and beautify America, the bill proposed to eliminate ugly adverts, plant new flowers, as well as clean up city parks.
