Hello mercedescreech!

Each section of the coordinate plane is called as quadrants.

A cartesian oordinate plane has 4 quadrants. They are :

  • I quadrant → This quadrant lies to the right of the y-axis & above the x-axis. Both the coordinates of the points marked here will have positive values (+x, +y).
  • II quadrant → This quadrant lies to the left of the y-axis & above the x-axis. The abscissa will have negative value while the ordinate will have positive value (-x, +y).
  • III quadrant → This quadrant lies to the left of the y-axis & below the x-axis. Both the coordinates of the points marked here will have negative values (-x, -y).
  • IV quadrant → This quadrant lies to the right of the y-axis & below the x-axis. The abscissa will have a  positive value while the ordinate will have negative  (+x,  - y).

Refer to the attachment for the cartesian graph.
