yes. first things first, more people became aware of what it does, as with anything that gets advertising. but that also showed more people the negative effects because we can see it all around us! for example, you may not have thought a sickness wasn't that bad if barely anyone has it, but you may think the same virus that has spread way more is terrible because you can see the effects with your own eyes. this has caused people to start vaping because they think its better after seeing the effects of tobacco, so it just creates a loop.
