LEARNING TASK 2 INTERPRETATION: SOLVE THE TROLLEY PROBLEM.

There is a runaway trolley barreling down the railway tracks. Ahead, on the tracks, there are five people tied up and unable to move. The trolley is headed straight for them. You are standing some distance off in the train yard, next to a lever. If you pull this lever the trolley will switch to a different set of tracks. However, you notice that there is one person on the sidetrack. You have two options.

1. Do nothing and allow the trolley to kill the five people on the main track

2.Pull the lever, diverting the trolley onto the sidetrack where it will kill one person.

Which is the more ethical option? Or, more simply: What is the right thing to do? Justify your answer using the lesson above.

Moral dilemmas such as the trolley dilemma above are used to gauge people's application of their emotional and logical thoughts in varying circumstances. Given the situation described, I will choose option 2.

The more ethical option is diverting the trolley.

Moral obligation and utilitarian views indicate that observing the situation already makes us participatory in it. So, doing nothing will be morally wrong.

Diverting the trolley will help to save more lives even though the life of the one person standing in the way is equally important as those of the others.

Reasoning logically and ethically, however, one death is better than five deaths. Therefore, option 2 is right.
