The cause that led to the increase in steel consumption seen in the graph is the increase in population.

In the graph, you can see the relationship between the millions of people and steel consumption and the centuries. The graph shows that population growth between 1700 and 1900 was minimal because it did not exceed 100 million people.

From 1900 onwards the population began to grow from 100 million to 600 million.

On the other hand, steel began to be exploited in the mid-1800s and until 1900 it had not exceeded 100 million tons. After 1900 it increased rapidly to 250 million tons and by the year 2000, it had already exceeded 700 tons.
