Light stage/light dependent stage - this takes place only in the presence of light. It occurs in the grana areas of the chloroplasts. Light energy is used to split water molecules into Hydrogen atoms and oxygen atoms. Since light energy is used to split the water molecules, the reaction is known as photolysis.
