Catherine played a big role in the Revolutionary War. She was a spy and a messenger. Catherine Moore Barry became one of the greatest women of the Revolutionary War by gathering the Militia for battle, and helped defeat the British in the Battle of Cowpens. Kate was very popular at the time because of her intelligence and bravery.

There were many causes for the Revolutionary War. But one of the biggest events was the Boston Tea Party, where a group of colonists disguised as Indians and threw chests of tea overboard into Boston Harbor, due to Britain putting a tax on the tea. Because of the Boston Tea Party, the British closed the Harbor until the colonists paid for the tea, which is called the Coercive Act. Then, the final act that leads to the war was the Declaratory Act, where Britain was in charge of taxing and making the decisions for the colonies. Once the Revolutionary War officially started, one of the first battles was the battle of Bunker Hill. Near Bunker Hill, the colonists, (the patriots) and the British fought. When the British charged up the hill to fight, they retreated, ran back, and tried again. Next on their second try, the patriots ran low on ammo, with an effect of making the British win the Battle. At the battle of Lexington and Concord, the British continue to march on to Concord to fight, but due to the little success for the patriots, their militia increases to over twenty thousand. But even with a large number of men in the militia, the colonists were again forced to retreat.

On October 22, 1752, Catherine Moore Barry was born. She was the daughter of Charles and Mary Moore, and was the eldest of 10 children, and lived in Piedmont, South Carolina until she was married to Andrew Barry at age 15, and moved to Walnut Grove Plantation in Roebuck, South Carolina. The Barry family had three children. Her husband Andrew became a general in the war, and Kate often fought with him in some battles. Kate became a spy and a messenger of the Revolutionary War. She was a great use to the Patriots, due to her knowledge around the land. Catherine Moore Barry died on September 23, 1823. She was buried in her hometown, on Walnut Grove Plantation.

Legend says that Catherine Moore Barry tied her newborn baby to the bedpost while she rode off to warn the militia and the people about the British. The British were coming, so Catherine went to tell the Patriots. Her warning helped to prepare the colonial forces to defeat the British. The Colonial forces drove them out north and out of the state of South Carolina. She was a great help to the patriots because she knew all the Indian trials and shortcuts to get to places faster. Catherine was also a spy and a messenger bearer for the militia when the Battle of Cowpens was fought. The British were coming, so Catherine went to tell the Patriots. Catherine Moore Barry, born in 1752, helped the Patriots to win their independence from the British.
