A Mars rover traveled from point A to point B at a speed of 4 cm/sec. Worsening conditions during the return trip caused the rover to travel at a speed of 2.5 cm/sec, and increased travel time by 15 minutes. What is the distance between point A and point B?

Respuesta :

fichoh

Using the speed - time relation, the distance between point A and B is 6000 cm

Recall :

  • Distance = speed × time
  • Time = distance / speed

Let ; the time taken = t ; distance = d

To trip :

  • d = 4t ----(1)

Fro trip :

  • t is in seconds ; 15 minutes = (15×60) = 900 seconds

d = 2.5(t + 900)

d = 2.5t + 2250 - - - - - (2)

Equating (1) and (2)

4t = 2.5t + 2250

Collect like terms

4t - 2.5t = 2250

1.5t = 2250

t = 2250 / 1.5

t = 1500 seconds

Hence, distance = 4(t) = 4(1500) = 6000 cm

Therefore, the distance between the points is 6000 cm
